SPURS, which stands for Special People Using Riding Skills, is a therapeutic riding center which provides opportunities for growth through horse-related activities for people with disabilities and for children who are disadvantaged. Hippotherapy, "treatment with the help of a horse," is carried out by licensed pediatric physical therapists and especially trained instructors who use the horse to achieve improved client functioning and rehabilitation, utilizing the three dimensional movement of the horse. Founded in 1992, SPURS is one of the oldest therapeutic riding centers in South Dakota. In 1996, SPURS moved to 40 acres northwest of Aberdeen.
