Oct. 27, 2010 - PRLog -- Loc8 Code Ltd, a revolutionary all-Ireland digital address code, providing precise address information recently won ‘Best Geographical Information Project of the Year’ award at the Irish Organisation for Geographical Information (IRLOGI) Annual Excellence Awards 2010, held at Chartered Accountants House, Dublin.

The nominations and voting process were undertaken by members of IRLOGI, which is the the umbrella organisation for the geographical information industry in Ireland; whose unique focus is collecting, exchanging and disseminating geographic information.

The Cork based company Loc8 Code Ltd. launched with Garmin Europe at The Science Gallery, Trinity College, Dublin in July and has since had over 78,000  visits  to their website with over 49,800 codes generated.

Gary Delaney, CEO of Loc8 Code Ltd told us, ‘Loc8 Code Ltd initially generated this service to improve destination and address searches across the whole island of Ireland and enable consumers to generate their own codes, thereby pinpointing the specific location of their individual private residences and commercial properties to within +/- 6 metres.  Consumers can then communicate their Loc8 Code to businesses such as multi-drop vehicles, web retailers and emergency services who, through the use of Garmin SatNavs, will find their location more rapidly. The system, which is a smarter form of postcode, therefore enhances the reaching of destinations, with monetary savings and several benefits in terms of lifestyles, time-management and, ultimately, our carbon footprint.  Additionally, Loc8 Codes have exposed the potential to uniquely identify the exact location of events, landmarks and other points of interest, revolutionising the way people navigate to destinations across the whole of Ireland.’

The system, which, according to the recent Irish Government’s Oireachtas Report could be suitable for adoption as the NATIONAL postcode, is very simple to use, and works through the input of address information of any location into the Loc8 Code website (www.loc8code.com  ), the site then generates a unique navigation code and assigns it to the individual location. It will be suitable to anyone who relies upon navigating to or finding the location of an individual location; whether a private consumer or delivery business. Not only can the code be used in a SatNav or GPS enabled mobile device, but also it can be used in conjunction with a web address to map a location easily – www.loc8code.com/W8L-82-4YK  will show the Loc8 Code on a map.

‘Being invited to speak at the GIS Ireland 2010 Annual Conference was a great honour for all of us here at Loc8 Code Ltd and winning ‘The Best Geographic Information Project of the year 2010’ award reiterate’s the fact that people really do need this service,’ Delaney added.

The Event, which was coordinated by IRLOGI, the umbrella organisation for the geographical information industry in Ireland, and a member of EUROGI - the European umbrella organisation for geographical information, was opened by Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation Conor Lenihan TD who has personal interest in geospatial information particularly where there is potential for inward investment, jobs and growth. The Minister for State indicated that similar geographic information systems –had a big part to play in the development of the GI application in Ireland.
