Oct. 27, 2010 - PRLog -- With the start of charity facial hair month ‘Movember’ approaching, the UK’s leading independent celebrity fashion website decided to find out what women really think about hair on a man.

MyCelebrityFashion.co.uk found that over half, 54%, of women admit to being more attracted to a man with facial hair; with the majority, 76%, of these explaining that they find men with facial hair ‘more masculine’ than those without.

The study was conducted by http://www.MyCelebrityFashion.co.uk in order to gauge the popularity of male body/facial hair amongst members of the British female public, with a sample of 1, 832 women aged 18 and over taking part.

Respondents to the study were asked the question, “Do you prefer a man with facial hair, or a man who is clean shaven?” Over half, 54%, of the women who took part stated that they preferred a man with facial hair; with only one in three, 32%, explaining that they preferred a ‘clean shaven’ look. The remaining 14% admitted that they ‘didn’t mind.’

The women who preferred facial hair on a man were further asked to stipulate what type of facial hair they found most attractive. Two thirds, 63%, explained that they favoured ‘all-over stubble’ on a man; in comparison to just one in ten, 12%, who preferred a beard. Furthermore, 19% of the women taking part admitted that they preferred a moustache; whilst just 6% explained that they favoured goatees.

When asked to state why they preferred a man with facial hair to one with a ‘clean shaven’ look; three quarters, 76%, of the female respondents explained that they found a man with facial hair ‘more masculine,’ and subsequently more attractive. In contrast, one in ten, 9%, admitted that they thought clean-shaven men ‘often looked young.’

Results were similar when female respondents to the study were asked to state if they preferred a man with body hair (chest and back), or one without.  51% claimed to prefer a man with hair on his chest and back; with one in five, 22%, admitting that they ‘didn’t mind.’ Comparatively, just over a quarter 27% stated that they preferred a ‘smooth’ look on a man’s body.

Of those who preferred a man with hair on his chest and back, just over two fifths, 41%, explained that they found a smooth-bodied man ‘too feminine.’ Comparatively, over half, 52%, of the women who took part in the study admitted that they had dated a man who ‘disliked’ his body hair.

The study also asked respondents to the study to choose from a multi-answer question which celebrities (past and present), they felt had the most attractive facial hair. The top 5 results were as follows:

1) David Beckham (all-over stubble) - 68%

2) Zac Efron (beard/ moustache) – 51%

3) Tom Selleck (moustache) – 48%

4) Johnny Depp (goatee) – 41%

5) Robert Downey Jnr. (goatee) – 38%

Andy Barr, marketing director of http://www.MyCelebrityFashion.co.uk, commented on the findings:

“With the start of the famous ‘Movember’ charity moustache month approaching, we thought it would be interesting to look into how women really feel about facial hair on men. Despite it being somewhat of a rumour that women aren’t a fan of overly hairy men; our results proved quite the opposite, with the majority of women preferring both facial and bodily hair on a man, to a man with a ‘smoother’ image.

“This can probably be explained by going back to instinct, above all. Men with more testosterone were more likely to succeed as hunter/gatherers, and were as a result rather hairy. Luckily for hairy blokes, the likes of Beckham and Johnny Depp have made facial hair more than fashionable in recent years; so all men can don that ‘tache with pride!”
