Visa options for students who are about to finish their Australian International course

We have put together some options for International students who are studying in Australia.

Oct. 27, 2010 - PRLog -- What are current Australian International students going to do upon completion of their course?

Due to the current state of the General Skilled Migration (GSM) program and the Department of Immigration & Citizenship’s reforms, particularly with the Skilled Occupation List (SOL), many international students in Australia studying a trade qualification have been led to believe that they are no longer eligible for Permanent Residency.

While the changes to GSM have affected both offshore and onshore applicants, International students in Australia should be made aware that while the GSM pathway to permanent residency may no longer be available to them, other pathways to permanent residency certainly exist.

Visa Options

For students who are close to completing studies, the following are some of the options that are available:

Note – all applicants have slightly different circumstances, so make your appointment with TSS Immigration for a personalised assessment.

Temporary Visas

•   Skilled – Graduate visa (Subclass 485)
o   The Skilled – Graduate visa is a temporary residency visa allowing international students who do not qualify for permanent General Skilled Migration visas to remain in Australia for 18 months. This gives them the opportunity to gain skilled work experience, improve their English language skills and extend their time in Australia to seek out other visa options.
o   Do you meet the criteria for this visa? Speak to our team of Registered Migration Agents so that they may assess your eligibility in light of the current regulations.

•   Temporary Business (Long Stay) – Standard Business Sponsorship (Subclass 457) visa:
o   Australian Employers wishing to sponsor overseas workers to fill nominated skilled positions in Australia may sponsor them through the Subclass 457 visa. This is a Temporary Residency visa but it is an appropriate visa that can lead to Permanent Residency should you be eligible.

Permanent Visas

o   Employer Nomination Scheme (121/856):
•   The Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) permits Australian employers to sponsor foreign skilled workers to live and work in Australia. The ENS is a permanent residency visa.

o   Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (119/857):
•   Australian Employers in low population growth or regional areas of Australia may sponsor foreign skilled workers to live and work in Australia through the Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (RSMS). The RSMS is a permanent residency visa allowing the sponsored worker to live and work in Australia.
