Vasella’s presentation, “Improving the Practice of Medicine: The Role of Drug Discovery & Health Care Systems,” runs from 8 to 9 a.m. and will be preceded by breakfast and registration at 7:15 a.m.
Vasella recently took the position as chairman of the board of directors for Novartis. From 1996 to 2000, he served as Novartis’ CEO and executive member of the board of directors. During his tenure as CEO, he led Novartis through a period of dynamic growth, propelling Novartis into the ranks of the world’s most successful healthcare companies. Vasella also strategically refocused Novartis’ portfolio to include pharmaceuticals, vaccines and diagnostics, generics, and consumer health.
As Chairman and CEO, Vasella has enhanced Novartis’ corporate governance policies and also Novartis on the New York Stock Exchange. He strengthened Novartis’ research capacity by creating the Novartis Institute for BioMedical Research and the Genomics Institute of the Novartis Research Foundation.
