Hindu Temple of Scotland to Open Diwali at the Square 2010

Live Folk Dancing and Song to give Glasgow a flavour of South Indian Culture

Oct. 26, 2010 - PRLog -- On November 7th, 2010 from 1pm till 7pm, George Square in Glasgow will play host for the second year running to the Hindu and Sikh festival of light, otherwise known as Diwali. Oceanic Consulting will once again feature a variety of entertainment for the whole family to enjoy, including authentic Indian music along with inspiring musical and dancing talent; a variety of exciting stalls; and authentic food to tantalise the taste buds. This year will once again see the Hindu Temple of Scotland opening the celebrations with a brief demonstration including a traditional South Indian Pooja (Prayer) which will be followed by a speech about the significance of Diwali. Artists will also perform Bharathanatyam (Folk Dances) and vocal songs on the stage to give a flavour of South Indian Culture.

The temple, situated in the former Wardlawhill Church in Glasgow, aims to promote the ideals of Hinduism and develop the cultural beliefs that originated in Southern part of India. It does this through sermons, prayers and lectures by spiritual personalities. A spokesperson from the temple voiced her support for the Diwali at the Square event;

"Hindu Temple of Scotland has now moved into Rutherglen. We are aiming to bring a 9ft stone idol of Lord Ganesh from India, and have it erected in our temple very soon. It will then be known as Sundara Ganapathy Temple, named after Lord Ganesh. As a South Indian community we aim to promote our rich culture in Scotland. On 7th of Novemver 2010, Oceanic Consulting has very kindly given us the opportunity to open the event by an initial prayer. This prayer (pooja) will be done in a traditional way as it is done in South India, by a professional priest, which will be followed by a few songs and south Indian dances. This will bring out the true flavour of Diwali. One of the committee members will give a short speech about the significance of Diwali, which will be very informative for the spectators on that day. I hope we all have a great time on that day".

Amit Arora, Business Development Director with the Oceanic Group, voiced his support at having the temple perform the opening ceremony for the second year;

“Having the Hindu Temple of Scotland open the festival for the second year running really adds to the authenticity of event and will help capture the true spirit of Diwali.  The demonstration that the Temple is putting on will give a genuine insight into what the festival of light represents to Hindus and Sikhs across the world.”

Other entertainment lined up for the day includes; fairground rides, an interactive Bollywood dance workshop, fire breathers, face painting and a variety of stalls selling clothing, jewellery, sweets and authentic foods giving the public an opportunity to purchase something authentic to India.
