About the all new 2011 Hyundai Equus

Every so often, a challenger comes along to set a new standard, to reset expectations of performance, value and quality. Hyundai did exactly that with the Genesis, delivering the room, luxury and performance of a Mercedes-Benz E-Class or Lexus GS, but at the lower price range of a Mercedes C-Class or Lexus ES. The Genesis has been a hit with critics and customers alike.

And now comes the next chapter: Equus. Hyundai is setting its sights on the full-size Lexus LS and Mercedes-Benz S-Class. Equus will be priced in the mid-$50,000 range, but it will offer what Lexus customers pay $65,000 and up for, and what Mercedes S-Class drivers get for $91,000-plus.

Seriously? You’d better believe it. First, quality will be world class, as it is on all current Hyundai models. But getting down to the nitty gritty of what makes a premium full-size luxury sedan, Hyundai is coming ready to win…win savvy luxury customers, that is.

Power? Equus is coming with a 385-hp V8, just beating the 380 hp in the Lexus and the 382 hp in the big Mercedes. That’s a stunning achievement, made more stunning when you consider it will use less fuel than the Mercedes, too. The Equus, as well, will run just fine on Regular grade fuel, giving up a scant seven horsepower to do so. You won’t miss the hp, but you’ll definitely welcome the fuel cost savings.

Keep in mind that the Hyundai Tau 4.6-liter V8 is a two-time Wards 10 Best Engine winner –a coveted award from a respected automotive trade journal.

Outside, the Equus is a bit larger than the standard-wheelbase Lexus LS and just slightly shorter than the big Benz. Inside, Equus gives up nothing to the others in roominess. In fact, it beats the S-Class in front legroom, the Lexus in rear legroom (by 3.1 inches!) and is similar to those cars in headroom. This is a true full-size luxury sedan, no compromises, yet the Equus drives with agility. And maneuvering is easy thanks to a 37.7 foot turning circle and variable-effort steering system.

Speaking of driving, Equus will be an engaging machine on your favorite road. Technology including five-link front and rear suspension systems, standard 19-inch wheels and Continuous Damping Control (CDC) will ensure that the Equus glides over the bumps without feeling numb to the driver.

With technology rivaling more expensive luxury sedans, Equus showcases features such as a lane departure warning system, electronic air suspension, smart cruise control and a Lexicon® audio system with LOGIC7® technology. In the Equus, this amazing surround-sound audio system includes a 13-channel digital amplifier and 17 speakers producing 608 watts of sound in 7.1 discrete surround-sound audio. Equus also offers the clarity of digital HD Radio technology, XM Satellite Radio and iPod/USB integration. There’s another luxury automaker that uses Lexicon audio: Rolls-Royce.

The Hyundai Equus checks all the right boxes for premium luxury, too: leather upholstery, Alcantara headliner, natural wood trim and leather-wrapped French-stitched instrument panel, plus heated and cooled seats.

Safety, a Hyundai strong suit, will certainly be commensurate with the premium positioning of the Equus. Its roster of safety technology takes a backseat to no competitor and will include Electronic Stability Control (ESC), nine airbags and electronic active head restraints.

All of this will come wrapped in a striking, yet elegant package that will turn heads…and no doubt garner much admiration for its original design direction. The one thing the Hyundai Equus will not have, however, is a badge and an attitude that are somehow supposed to be worth an extra $30,000. The world has changed since the “establishment” luxury brands made the rules, and Hyundai is leading that change.

Whether or not you’ve owned or driven any of the luxury leaders, make sure to get behind the wheel of a 2011 Hyundai Equus for a test drive when it arrives. And check your expectations at the door. http://www.vandergriffhyundai.com/index.htm
