Oct. 25, 2010 - PRLog -- With every new album he produces, singer-songwriter Gary Alt finds intriguing and exciting ways to pay tribute to those who greatly influenced his life and art. John Lennon, Eric Clapton, Pink Floyd and Sting, among others, are often called to mind on his latest CD, “Gift of Projection,” although make no mistake about it: the new release also provides a window into Alt’s own emotional spirit since all of the songs are original compositions from measure to measure.

“I’ve written a lot of songs over the years, covered a considerable number of topics, and paid homage to many legends and musical styles,” says Alt, who has performed solo and with bands at clubs in New York, New Jersey and throughout the Southeast,  and has appeared on several radio programs. “I may take a little break now for personal reasons, but there are a handful of high-energy numbers I recently wrote that might deserve a platform of their own. So I made the decision to lay them down, before the break.”

The list of new tunes on “Gift of Projection” is a shorter one than on Alt’s previous efforts, which include “Not for Sale to Minors” and “Tribute.” That, too, was a strategic decision he made as a way of closely focusing his listeners’ attention on the mood that defined his musical disposition over the last few months. “Maybe it’s a little easier to digest that way,” he suggests. “After all, it’s all rock ‘n roll. And if we’re gonna rock, let’s just rock.”

Among the songs on the new CD are “The Cruelest Goodbye,” an anguished cry that mixes rock with blues and vocally calls John Lennon to mind; “The Moon Always Finds Me,” a Cream-reflective cut with an arrangement that is very ethereal; “Do to Me,” an impulsive ode that is among the hardest of the rock numbers on the disk and features captivating harmonies, and several others that have hints of soul, grunge, garage and other recent styles of popular music.

In addition to composing and arranging duties, Alt also played most of the instruments, provided most of the vocals, and directed most of the production on “Gift of Projection.” A few of his past collaborators make appearances on the new project, including Larry Hayden, who wrote the lyrics and provides the vocals for “End of the Lyin,” and Jason Arvanites, who provides vocals on “Bleed for You.”

Gary Alt, who lives in Northern New Jersey, has been composing and performing music since his pre-teenage years. His last CD, “Not for Sale to Minors,” was noted by one reviewer as an album that “rocked my world one minute and soothed my soul the next... Something for everyone.” His previous effort was a fascinating album called “Tribute,” which was an homage to three dozen of his most important musical influences, including Steely Dan, Burt Bacharach, The Beatles, Carole King, Stevie Wonder, The Allman Brothers and others. One reviewer called it “an exuberant and inspiring tribute.”

Alt also wrote and produced the albums “It’s About the Kids,” “Alien’s Heart” and “Open Road.”
