Oct. 25, 2010 - PRLog -- Gaining Green Community status will be financially beneficial to the Town of Sherborn. Not only will this help the town reduce costs through smarter energy use, it will open up new financial opportunities. Municipalities that meet four clean energy goals under the Green Communities program are eligible for grants for renewable energy and energy efficiency projects. These grant programs will help communities like Sherborn save energy costs for residents and reduce the environmental impact of municipal operations.

The five energy goals include adopting a policy ofreducing municipal energy consumption by 20 percent in five years, committing to purchasing fuel-efficient vehicles when feasible, designating zoning for renewable  energy projects, and becoming an early adopter of a stronger energy code with that will lead to more energy efficient buildings.   “Energy costs for the town have averaged $300,000-400,000 for last three years would represent a significant savings for the town,” said Energy Committee Chairman Daniel Glickman.

As a first step toward this goal, Energy Committee member John Higley biked all the way from Sherborn to Boston to hand deliver the town’s application. “This is a positive move to bring our community together in ways that can improve air and water quality, reduce fossil fuel consumption and save money,” said Glickman. “We’re excited that in a small way we can help to strengthen this community that we cherish.”

The committee’s diligence is already starting to pay off. The Town of Sherborn will be receiving technical  assistance from the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources to help attain Green Community status.
