Follow on Google News | Media Training Question # 33 – Can You Tell Me How To Get To Sesame Street? As a media trainer I like about this story as it is real. It doesn’t involve controversy. It isn’t about race, politics or hate.In fact what it is is a great message that any parent and any kid understands and it’s pretty darned fun to watch.
By: MediaTraining.me Mazzarino and his wife are the adoptive parents of a young girl from Ethiopia. And as he shares in the CNN interview I posted, his daughter, like any little girl, became fascinated with her hair. She wanted it long, and blonde and princess like, etc. And Mazzarino, doing what every creative person does, used his life experiences, in this case his daughter, as his muse and her daily offerings often end up on Sesame Street in one form or the other. It’s just a great little story with the twist being that this particular production of “I Like My Hair” has become a Justin Bieber like hit. As a media trainer and message shaper, what I like about this story is it is real. It doesn’t involve controversy. It isn’t about race or politics or hate. In fact what it is is a great message that any parent and any kid understands and it’s pretty darned fun to watch. With the clamoring last week the U.S. stop funding NPR, which is to radio what PBS is to television, this is a classic example of why a continuation of funding for public programming is critical. While I was not a Sesame Street baby that doesn’t mean I don’t understand the importance and significance this program has had in shaping young minds for decades now. I’m proud of what Sesame Street is and I hope you are, too. But this story also in almost a subliminal way shares another story of a white couple adopting a black child and how normal the challenges are in raising her. I like this story just because I do and for no other reason. Sometimes we get so caught up in the sensational, as I do as well, that we forget the importance of sharing simple stories that teach important and even not so important lessons. That’s the real beauty of this story for me. I like the song, it’s just cute. I like the message because it is infectious. I like the opportunity the song gives parents and kids alike to deal with a topic that can be a challenge at home. But what I loved about this story is the fact that Mazzarino has this beautiful daughter as a muse. I just can’t help but thinking that when she is older and fully understands that she helped shape the way children learned and parents communicated that it will do amazing things to her self esteem. I see a day off in the future when her Dad tells her how important she was to his success and when he thanks her for just being her, pure and simple. As a parent I love this idea. As a media professional I love this story, and as someone who sees so much bad to write about it’s just nice to write about something that is just good and for no other reason. I guess if the goal of this Blog is to teach and temper, this post may not have hit its mark, but I could care less. I think Joey Mazzarino is a lucky Dad and I appreciate that he is sharing his family with us. Just enjoy this for what it is: FUN! # # # Tony has spent the better part of the past two decades in and around the media.
