The Gentle Cycling Company Beer Country Ride is cycling as it should be - self-guided, no big hills and comfy bikes, with a cold beer at the end! Ride through gorgeous Nelson countryside with its early settler’s history, then enjoy a well-earned delicious tasting of local beery brews. The route takes you past some of New Zealand's only remaining hop gardens with their distinctive elevated growing system creating a green roof floating above the ground.
The lush landscape of the Moutere has a history of hop growing and beer brewing that dates back to the times of the first German immigrant settlers, who bought their beer making traditions with them. The landscape is dotted with the remnants of their craft - old hop kilns with their distinctive steep-pitched roofs and original cob walls. Some are still in use today as farm buildings, homes and artist's studios. Some have settled on their foundations like elderly gentlemen in the corner of some medieval beer hall, supping on a stein and reminiscing about better days. Today there's a resurgence of boutique breweries in the region as beer connoisseurs rediscover the delights of real ale, made on a small scale by people who care about it.
Rose Griffin, Gentle Cycling's owner, says the beer ride will appeal to lovers of beer, history, or just pretty Nelson landscapes. “Riders can stop en route to sample local cheeses and preserves and pick up some picnic food to savour under the shade of a tree, before they head back to the Moutere Inn for a beer tasting session.”
The Gentle Cycling Company Beer Ride starts and finishes at the Moutere Inn (built by one of the original German settlers) www.moutereinn.co.nz where a tasting platter of locally brewed beers is available.
Riders will also visit McCashins Brewery www.mccashins.co.nz along the way.
