A number of recent developments in the UK construction industry corroborate our core view: * The UK's construction sector has experienced a relatively strong period over recent months. Following adverse weather in Q110, which delayed a large number of projects, Q210 experienced an upturn - due both to the backlog of work and the new projects awarded during the stimulus-filled last few months of the Labour government. Combined with resumed access to credit over the past six months, this has created a short-term bubble in the sector. * However, BMI is wary of this indicating a trend of any sort, although the construction sector is expected to emerge from a two year recession in 2010, there is little in the way of fundamental demand driving longer-term strength. Our view was corroborated by the Scottish Building Federation, which warned observers to be cautious over figures showing a 17% rise in construction output in Scotland. The body argued that cuts will have a painful impact on activity, adding that commercial activity remains 46% below its peak some years ago. The new coalition government far-reaching slashes in capital spending has become the defining factor for 2010, with over 60 projects worth around GBP10.4bn (US$16.04bn) * Our 3.58% growth forecast for the year, takes into account the base effects from an 11.1% contraction in the construction sector experienced in 2010, one of the worst in the developed markets. Moreover, new order expansion contracted for the third consecutive month in August 2010 as employment in the sector fell yet again. Overall growth in the country's construction sector grew in August, but also revealed a deceleration compared with the previous month - the third such slowdown in three consecutive months. While axing a staggering number of projects across the construction sector, the new coalition government announced the continuation of 13 transport projects worth around GBP29.8bn (US$45.97bn) For more information or to purchase this report, go to: - http://www.fastmr.com/ Partial Table of Contents: Executive Summary SWOT Analysis - United Kingdom Infrastructure SWOT - United Kingdom Infrastructure Project Finance SWOT - United Kingdom Economic SWOT - United Kingdom Political SWOT Market Overview - United Kingdom Industry Forecast Scenario - Table: UK Construction And Infrastructure Industry Data - Construction And Infrastructure Forecast Scenario - Special Events: Olympic Games Transport Infrastructure - Table: Transport And Infrastructure Industry Data - Transport Infrastructure Forecast Scenario - Transport Infrastructure Overview - Major Projects - New And Ongoing Projects - Airports - Ports - Roads - Railways - Major Projects Table - Transport - Table: Major Infrastructure Projects -Transport Energy And Utilities Infrastructure - Table: Energy & Utilities Infrastructure Industry Data - Energy And Utilities Infrastructure Forecast Scenario - Energy And Utilities Infrastructure Overview - Major Projects - New And Ongoing Projects - Power Plants - Water - Major Projects Table - Energy And Utilities - Table: Major Infrastructure Projects - Energy & Utilities Business Environment - United Kingdom Business Environment - Rewards - Risks - Regional Overview - Developed States Infrastructure Business Environment Ratings - Table: Developed States Infrastructure Business Environment Ratings - Project Finance Ratings United Kingdom Project Finance Ratings - Design And Construction - Commissioning And Operating - Overall Project Finance Rating - Regional Overview - Project Finance Ratings: Outlook For Developed States - Table: Design And Construction Rating - Table: Commissioning And Operating Rating - Table: Overall Project Finance Rating Macroeconomic Outlook - Table: United Kingdom - Economic Activity Political Outlook - Domestic Politics - Foreign Policy - Long-Term Political Outlook Company Monitor - Bovis Lend Lease - Balfour Beatty Global Overview - Global Project Finance Ratings - Table: Design and Construction Rating - Table: Commissioning and Operating Rating - Table: Overall Project Finance Rating - Global Infrastructure Business Environment Ratings Full Table of Contents is available at: -- http://www.fastmr.com/ About Business Monitor International Business Monitor International (BMI) offers a comprehensive range of products and services designed to help senior executives, analysts and researchers assess and better manage operating risks, and exploit business opportunities, across 175 markets.
