Follow on Google News | San Quentin News Announces New Web SiteThe San Quentin News, California's only inmate-produced newspaper and one of the few in the world, has a new website.
By: Steve McNamara San Quentin is California's oldest prison, having been started on a ship docked at the Marin County shore of San Francisco Bay in 1852. The inmates lived on the ship, cleared the land and built the structure for a land-based prison – the inmates, that is, who didn't just walk away. The paper was founded in 1940 by legendary progressive warden Clinton Duffy. Its publication schedule has varied, depending on the mood of the warden in charge. Some wardens, finding that the courts prohibited censorship, simply pulled the plug and the paper would vanish for a period. The current revival dates to June 2008 when Warden Robert Ayers Jr. revived the paper. For more go to http://www.sanquentinnews.com End
