Oct. 21, 2010 - PRLog -- The San Quentin News, California's only inmate-produced newspaper and one of the few in the world, has a new website: http://www.sanquentinnews.com. The website gives the background of the paper, describes the inmate staff and advisers, provides pdf files of the current and some past issues and has a place for comments.

San Quentin is California's oldest prison, having been started on a ship docked at the Marin County shore of San Francisco Bay in 1852. The inmates lived on the ship, cleared the land and built the structure for a land-based prison – the inmates, that is, who didn't just walk away.

The paper was founded in 1940 by legendary progressive warden Clinton Duffy. Its publication schedule has varied, depending on the mood of the warden in charge. Some wardens, finding that the courts prohibited censorship, simply pulled the plug and the paper would vanish for a period.

The current revival dates to June 2008 when Warden Robert Ayers Jr. revived the paper. For more go to http://www.sanquentinnews.com
