Popular jazz singer Ron Gill spent more than twenty-four years as a jazz DJ on WGBH radio in Boston. He will be accompanied by Berklee College faculty member John Stein on guitar and bass, with Gilad Barkan on piano. Proceeds from ticket and CD sales for this great evening of music directly benefit the YWCA Southeastern Massachusetts. Their recent CD, Turn Up the Quiet, released in May followed the unprecedented success in early 2010 of Mr. Stein's previous Whaling City Sound release, Raising the Roof, which spent 6 weeks in the Top Ten on JazzWeek's national radio chart, peaking at #2, with an additional 2 weeks at #3. Mr. Gill's thoughtful and nuanced delivery is put to good use in an eclectic selection of material, some well known, with some obscure gems thrown into the mix - all written by top composers of the American song book. John Stein and Ron Gill have performed together in various groups for many years, and they deliver the music with a sensitivity and sympathy that is rare, even among the best jazz artists. The rich interior of the 1866 Wamsutta Club provides the ideal setting for this quiet and moving music, and enhances the ambience of the evening and performance. The club is located at 427 County Street, at the corner of Union Street, in downtown New Bedford. Ample convenient parking is available right at the Club. The Wamsutta Club is handicap-accessible. Tickets are $25 each, and are available at the YWCA, 20 South Sixth Street, New Bedford, (508) 999-3255, at Baker Books, 69 State Road, Dartmouth, (508) 997-6700, and by calling Whaling City Sound at (508) 992-6613. Tickets will be available at the door, but seating is limited and the event may sell out in advance. The choice of tunes is eclectic; The empathy between the artists shines through very clearly, Stein proves to be a very able accompanist, whether on guitar or playing bass with the piano of Gilad Barkan, who is also outstanding in the backing role... The planning research and rehearsal that went into a session like this is what makes for such an interesting programme and everyone should be congratulated, including the label for producing such an interesting release... ~ Don Mather ============================================ With Gill sounding like he learned to sing at the feet of Billy Eckstine and Stein knowing his way around a guitar fret board, this duo, with just a little bass coloration, make a completely enchanting adult jazz vocal date... ~ Chris Spector ============================================ A completely enchanting adult jazz vocal date, with an extra-heaping portion of class spread all over everything; This is a subtle set that you'll be digging long before you even realize it... Loaded with a classic sound and vibe that's always welcome. A winner throughout... ~ Wilbert Sostre / Jazz n Bossa Stein and Gill's Turn Up the Quiet is an exceptional exercise in hushed, reverential craftsmanship.
