Oct. 21, 2010 - PRLog -- RFID is the latest technology devised for identifying objects invisibly and transparently. Invisible means that visual elements are not involved in the process and transparent indicates that the process can take place in the presence of obstacles physically interposing between the elements of RFID.

The basic elements of a RFID system

You will need at least two things to run a RFID system. Both devices are typically able to both receive and transmit radio signals. The static component of the system is called the reader. The other basic component is the RFID tag. This device is attached to the object whose identification code it contains.

In larger RFID systems that need not only to identify but also to manipulate objects a separate central processing unit may be attached to the reader. This cpu takes charge of implementing complicated processes.

The interaction of readers and tags

In a simple RFID system that is made for simple identification, the reader initiates the process by emitting a specific frequency of radio waves throughout a given perimeter, typically a few feet in radius. This frequency is capable of activating any tags that are within that parameter. Upon activation, the tag reacts by sending out information in the form of radio waves. When the reader senses this change in frequency, it reacts by triggering a device or storing the information it received from the tag.

In long distance RFID systems, the tags themselves transmit information. The info includes its own identification code as well as other bits of information that it has been programmed to send out. This type of system has a range of from 60 to 300 feet. It is used extensively to keep track of moving animals and objects in transit.

The kinds of tags

The reason why RFID is so popular as a tracking system is the considerable flexibility it offers. For instance, depending on the needs of the system, there are three types of tags available. The first type is the passive tag. This tag has no battery and is therefore incapable of transmitting radio frequency sequences on its own. The reader furnishes it with this power by activating it.

The active tag is fitted with a battery. It is capable of transmitting radio frequency sequences on its own. This is typically the kind of tag that is attached to objects and animals that need to be monitored.

The intermediary type of tag also has a battery but the power of the battery is primarily used for broadening the range of transmission rather than for producing the radio waves themselves.
