New Transportation market report from Business Monitor International: "Ukraine Shipping Report Q4 2010"

Oct. 21, 2010 - PRLog -- Germany's Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) is to invest US$90mn to expand its operations at the Ukrainian port of Odessa in preparation for projected growth in box throughput. The investment reflects HHLA's confidence that the Ukrainian port sector is a secure investment for foreign investors. The security of the sector was called into question last year during a disagreement between a container terminal operator and the port authority at the Ukrainian port of Illichivsk. HHLA's move is one of a company that believes box volumes at the port will recover from the downturn and continue to increase, a view shared by BMI.

Container volumes at the port dropped by 55.35% year-on-year (y-o-y) in 2009 as the decline in the global economy and trade battered the Ukraine, which resulted in the country's total trade dropping by 26.9% y-o-y. 2010 has so far been a year of recovery at the port of Odessa, with box throughput at the facility increasing by 38.9% y-o-y in the January-August period. BMI predicts that the port's throughput will increase y-o-y by 19.19% in 2010 to 304,483 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs).

Although this is a y-o-y increase in throughput, it is still way off the port's pre-downturn levels - in 2008 the facility handled 572,140TEUs. BMI expects this volume of box traffic to gradually be recovered at the port of Odessa. We project an average yearly increase of 23% over our mid-term (2010-2014) forecast period, which if realised will see the port reclaim its pre-downturn throughput level in 2013.

Pre-downturn, HHLA's terminal capacity was close to being reached. The investment in expanding the facility will enable the terminal to cater for the projected growth in traffic, which is necessary as by the end of our forecast period in 2014 we predict that the port of Odessa will be handling about 712,437TEUs per annum.

BMI believes that HHLA's further investment in the port of Odessa reflects its confidence in the country's port sector, which was badly shaken in 2009 during a dispute between Ukrtanscontainer (UTC), the Ukrainian subsidiary of Russia's National Container Company, and the Illichivsk port authority. HHLA has extended its tenure at the port by another 20 years, until 2044, having started operating at the port in 2001.
