This test may be used on patients who are or are not experiencing symptoms of periodontal disease. Common symptoms include bleeding gums, red or inflamed gums, and loss of bone around the teeth. Tests are performed by swishing a small amount of sterile saline throughout the mouth for 30 seconds. The saliva sample is then sent to the OralDNA Labs for processing.
The lab results will identify any harmful bacteria associated with gum infections. This will give Dr. Nemeth insight into how the patient will respond to harmful bacteria in the mouth, allowing him to optimize treatment. It will also help Dr. Nemeth to develop an effective treatment plan in order to reduce the overall bacterial risk for disease progression. It is Dr. Nemeth’s hope that with the help of this test, periodontal disease can be detected before irreversible damage occurs.
Also offered at Dr. Nemeth’s office is the OraRisk℠ HPV test which is a non-invasive screening tool used to identify the types of HPV that could possibly lead to oral cancer. The test allows Dr. Nemeth to establish if the patient is at an increased risk for oral cancer and determine appropriate action.
