Oct. 20, 2010 - PRLog -- Renowned Colorado State University professor and author Dr. Temple
Grandin, who has battled the effects of autism since childhood, will speak at the ninth annual Beacon Dinner to benefit the Sewall Child Development Center (SCDC) at the Hyatt Regency Tech Center November 1.

Dr. Grandin will introduce herself individually to attendees during the 6 p.m. cocktail hour and autograph her books. Time Magazine lists her among the 100 most influential people in the world, and her life was the subject of an HBO movie that won seven Emmy Awards.

The Beacon Dinner typically raises about $250,000 per year for Sewall. This year, the western‐style and attired event will include dinner at 7 p.m. with a live auction that will include a hockey stick autographed by the entire 2009‐2010 Colorado Avalanche team and a basketball autographed by the entire 2009‐2010 Denver Nuggets team, plus many other items to entice vigorous bidding.

The auctioneer will be Gary Corbett, and the master of ceremonies will be Kyle Keefe of Altitude Sports.

“The hundreds of people who attend this event every year have been buzzing about it ever since they learned they will have a chance to listen to Temple Grandin, and I personally anticipate that it will be a very inspiring moment,” said Heidi Heissenbuttel, Interim President of Sewall Child Development. “About half our children have special needs; and of those, about a third have Asperger’s Syndrome or another condition on the autism spectrum.”

SCDC has served Colorado children from its Capitol Hill location for 66 years. Sewall’s mission is to help children through age 5 who have disabilities, developmental delays and economic disadvantages. Sewall offers that help within inclusive environments alongside the children’s typically developing peers.

Tickets are $250 and can be purchased online at www.sewall.org (special events). Sponsorships for tables of 10 are also still available at all levels, from $2,500 to $25,000. For information, call 303‐399‐ 1800.

The team of professionals at Sewall Child Development Center in Denver is dedicated to helping young children through age 5 who have special needs due to disabilities, developmental delays or economic disadvantages. The organization was established in 1944 when Dr. Henry Sewall deeded his Denver home to “the cause of assisting crippled children,” and the mission evolved to include children with cognitive and social‐emotional disabilities. The Center emphasizes inclusiveness in its developmental preschool program. Sewall’s school census includes 500 children from 0 to 5 and reaches another 1,500 through programs with Denver Public Schools and other education centers. Sewall also offers comprehensive diagnostic evaluations for children and youth with developmental concerns through age 12. For more information go to www.sewall.org.
