Little Falls, Nj Dentist Dr. Sonia Giordano Offers Free Oral Cancer Screenings

Oct. 20, 2010 - PRLog -- LITTLE FALLS, NJ — Little Falls Dentist Dr. Sonia Giordano, a specialist in family and cosmetic dentistry, is celebrating the second year of her practice at 50 East Main Street by inviting residents from Little Falls and throughout Northern New Jersey to visit her Little Falls dental office for free oral cancer screenings during the month of November.

In addition to the oral cancer screenings, Dr. Giordano will donate $25 to the American Cancer Society’s Northern New Jersey Region for every person who makes a new patient appointment during November.

“We don’t hear much about oral cancer but it is a disease that kills about as many Americans as melanoma and twice as many as cervical cancer,” said Dr. Giordano. “Twenty-five percent of oral cancer victims have no known risk factors for the disease and, while males and smokers are at the highest risk, the incidence of oral cancer is rising among women, non-smokers and adults younger than 40 years.

“The good news is that oral cancer can be prevented with a quick and painless test of common oral spots. Most people have these tiny white or red spots in their mouths at one time or another and they do not usually contain any unhealthy cells. When a spot is detected, a small brush is used to quickly collect a sample for computer-assisted laboratory analysis. Because these spots take years to penetrate the basement membrane and cause any harm, with proper screening, they can be removed long before oral cancer can start,” she said.
 
Risk factors for oral cancer include the following:

•Using tobacco products including cigarettes, cigars, pipes, and smokeless and chewing tobacco
•Heavy alcohol use
•Chewing betel nuts
•Being infected with a certain type of human papilloma virus (HPV)
•Being exposed to sunlight (lip cancer only)
•Being male.

Located in the Tulip Gardens Professional Building across from the Prudential Real Estate Office in Little Falls, Dr. Giordano purchased the practice of Dr. Barry Spiesman in January 2009, where she began working as an office assistant when she was a 16-year-old Passaic Valley High School student. She was inspired by Dr. Spiesman’s professionalism and compassion and continued to work in his office throughout college and while earning her doctorate in dentistry at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. After honing her skills for several years at a nearby practice, Dr. Giordano welcomed the opportunity to buy Dr. Spiesman’s practice when he decided to retire.
