By: What House? Despite the budget cuts to be announced in around an hour’s time, the government is expected to set a target of building 150,000 affordable homes, as part of its plans to overhaul the council housing system. Tenants living in council accommodation are expected to be charged nearer the going rate in order to raise more money for the construction of more new homes. The social housing budget in England is expected to be slashed by over 50% in the Spending Review this week. The last Labour government spent in the region of £1.6bn on social housing last year, which helped construct around 50,000 new homes, but that subsidy is expected to be slashed by over 50% in the Spending Review this week. The proposed changes to the social housing market are a huge concern for some people, particularly the most vulnerable in society, according to Sarah Webb of the Chartered Institute of Housing. Webb told the BBC: “There will be an increasing number of people who just won't be able to afford somewhere to live. So while we think the government is right to reform, we are not entirely sure this is the way to do it.” There are currently a number of affordable housing schemes available to people seeking to buy a new home. A number of new home developers offer cheap homes to those seeking their first step on the housing ladder, through various initiatives. http://www.whathouse.co.uk/ http://www.whathouse.co.uk/ # # # What House?
