Oct. 19, 2010 - PRLog -- Canyon Lake, Texas – Representatives of the Coalition for Equitable Water Rates (CEWR) announced on friday that they had exceeded the required signatures from 10% of ratepayers, protesting the proposed Canyon Lake Water Service Company (CLWSC) 71% water rate increase.

The CEWR indicated that despite being denied a customer list from which to identify potential protesters, it had already attained protest signatures from approximately 25% of CLWSC’s entire customer base. By law, the CEWR has another 90 days from the scheduled implementation of the water rate increase to meet the signature requirement. A spokesman from the CEWR stated, “The response from the community has been extraordinary. Gathering the requisite number of protest signatures was not nearly as difficult as could be expected in these circumstances and clearly speaks to the degree of outrage by those who stand to be impacted by such a significant water rate increase. Additional petition signatures are being submitted to the Coalition daily.”

The CEWR now intends to concentrate on the next step of its formal protest by taking the petitions to the TCEQ (Texas Commission of Environmental Quality) in Austin, TX. The TCEQ will validate the signatures and set a hearing date for involved parties to argue their cases. The CEWR intends to hold CLWSC accountable to its customers for explaining the vast inequity in water rates with other utilities in the County and State.

With a 71% water increase, the CEWR points out that individual businesses in the area will be impacted by additional thousands of dollars per year, while some subdivisions could see increases from $5,000 to $15,000 depending on their annual usage.
