Oct. 19, 2010 - PRLog -- FedEx Express (FedEx), a subsidiary of FedEx Corp  and the world’s largest express transportation company, and Safe Kids Philippines (SKP), a non-government organization dedicated to preventing unintentional injury to children, today celebrated the International Walk to School Month with a series of activities designed to raise awareness on pedestrian safety issues. The celebration is organized as part of the FedEx/Safe Kids Walk This Way child pedestrian safety program.

The celebration kicked off with an advocacy walk involving hundreds of Grade V and VI students from Walk This Way beneficiary schools in Pasay, Parañaque, Quezon City, Olongapo, and Cebu. Together with FedEx and SKP volunteers and school and government representatives, the students walked across the vicinity of La Huerta Elementary School in Parañaque City to underscore the importance of keeping school children safe on the road.

The celebration also included a showcase of recently implemented road safety interventions implemented around the La Huerta Elementary School. The road improvement projects were inspired by photographs captured by schoolchildren from La Huerta Elementary School in July during the first phase of the FedEx/Safe Kids PHOTOVOICE: “Children’s Perspective in Road Traffic Safety” project. The project provided the students an opportunity to document environmental obstacles they encounter as pedestrians through photography.
The road improvements include installation of road signs and traffic barriers, improvement of drainage system, and rehabilitation of sidewalks, and traffic management. These improvements were put in place by FedEx employee volunteers and other members of the local community.

Since its launch in 2005, the FedEx/Safe Kids Walk this Way program has reached more than 600,000 children from 89 schools in the Philippines through classroom teaching and events promoting road safety for children. Last year, FedEx Philippines and SKP received the “Outstanding International Walk This Way Partnership” award from Safe Kids Worldwide for exemplary efforts in promoting pedestrian safety in the country.
