Oct. 18, 2010 - PRLog -- I had some fun waves yesterday. I had a look on the cams and there was still a 3 to 4ft SE swell and the wind had just moved around to the NE. With a high tide at 5:30pm and mid tide soon meant that if I left work just after lunch I could get home and out right when Butter Box would be at its peak. After turning the out of office on I sprinted home from the industrial waste lands of North Ryde and after a quick negotiation with the boss around picking the 4 year old, I was out in the water at 2pm. There was a small crew of six, three with long boards as I walked down the hill with another punter who appeared next to me on walk towards the pinnacle. Eight people did not inspire me much but as I was now committed I continued on the journey down the sharp stone staircase to the fossil encrusted rock ledge below. As I was doing my. “I know I’m old”, stretching, each one of the long board riders caught a pretty nice set wave right into knob rock and stepped up onto the ledge to head home. Things were looking up as this left only three out and 5 is a much better number.
I used the rip at the very tip of the rock ledge with my now great friend heading out straight off the rock close in. I had an easy paddle to just the right spot as one from out wide swept in and I paddled neatly on to it. With a wall I thought was definitely going to close out, a quick bottom turn, back up, and a blast of blue and white, I couldn’t make the tricky section and the green bubbly room was my next ride as I was tossed back and forth for the next few minutes. When I paddled back out we were down to only four and the next few waves I was a bit more choosy and got some nice, if not fat three footers and got the Psillakis Flyer fish really humming in some of the turns. Back out and it’s down to only my new mate Charlie and I, and for about 30 minutes we had it to ourselves till kneeborder Daman Beck and his mate joined us. I was spent, after having my completion worthy 10 waves and I was beaming like a stoked grommet, so I left them to deal with the afternoon crew of tradies that would most likely be joining them and took the slow walk back up the hill and home.
