Oct. 18, 2010 - PRLog -- Velvet Talk Management (formerly ITBI), an online reputation management firm in Toronto, has achieved a 3 month growth rate of 7700% with its new website according to data from Web analytics firm Alexa.  Mick McMullan, VTM's General Manager, comments that “the new site has just grown by leaps and bounds for us, which is really nice because we need to promote our new brand name quickly.  The fact that we've been able to do all this with absolutely no paid advertising or press coverage, is also great evidence for our prospective customers that we know how to do online marketing, especially Search Engine Optimation (SEO), which is a huge part of our online reputation management work.”  “This ought to make a few of our competitors jealous,” he continues with a laugh.

When asked how they did it, McMullan says he won't reveal all their secrets, but he does mention a few tips.

1.  Create highly relevant content and update it weekly.  Don't over-analyze everything; it's probably better to spend that time creating more content, which will ultimately generate more entry points to your organization's website.

2.  Run a blog and write stuff that appeals to your target audience.  Make it interesting, useful and sometimes provocative.

3.  Focus the description of your business on an area that has relatively broad appeal.  If you're a local business, then add an internationally relevant product or area of service.

4.  Don't get greedy and cheat.  So-called 'Black Hat SEO' techniques are likely to earn you penalties from the search engines and may ultimately get you black listed.

5.  Avoid duplication of your content as a way to build out your website because Google et al will penalize you for it.

McMullan elaborates on the last tip, asserting that good evidence of how much search engines frown upon content duplication is provided by the case of http://www.alexandrasamuel.com, a website operated by Alexandra Samuel.  “She's a well known Internet consultant”, says McMullan, “who parlayed her timely Harvard Ph.D dissertation about Web politics into regular gigs blogging for the Harvard Business Review and Oprah.com;  but, being a popular blogger and mad Twitter contributor have translated to her having a  website with an Alexa ranking that's only around 500,000 today.”  “The problem,” he continues, “is that Ms. Samuel's site is little more than an archive of the content that she's already posted on Oprah.com and HBR.org.”  “So, it seems clear," asserts McMullan, “that she's been penalized by the search engines big time and she could be getting a ton more business for her social media consultancy otherwise.”  He goes on to say that “it's actually quite surprising that someone like that would let that happen to her, she should be ranked at least ten or twenty thousand on Alexa, but what she's done is a great case study for the rest of us to learn by.”
