Halloween deadline looming for tax returns...file on time to avoid a fright

PRLog (Press Release) - Oct. 18, 2010 - With new the 31 October deadline for filing paper returns looming, Business Link is urging those that file their Self Assessment tax return on paper to take effective steps to ensure they meet the forthcoming deadline in order to avoid a fright on Halloween, plus a £100 penalty.

According to latest figures issued by HM Revenue & Customs, around 613,000 people across the East Midlands file a Self Assessment return every year, including:

Derbyshire 111,000
Leicestershire 105,000
Lincolnshire 108,000
Northamptonshire 102,000
Nottinghamshire 107,000
All East Midlands Unitary Authorities 80,000

If you normally file on paper, you could also file your return online instead. It’s simple to file your return electronically – three quarters of Self Assessment filers already do it – and you get three months longer to file.

Stephen Smith, Chief Executive of EMB Ltd, the organisation responsible for providing local access to the Business Link service adds “Online filing has other advantages too: your tax is calculated automatically; you get an immediate online acknowledgement once you’ve filed; and it’s processed faster, so any money you’re owed is repaid more quickly.”

Registering for online filing is simple – visit the official HMRC website at www.hmrc.gov.uk/sa and click “Register for Self Assessment Online”.
