FedEx Receives Committed to the Environment Award

FedEx Corp. (NYS: FDX) is recognized by The International Charter for clear commitment to understanding its environmental impact and reducing it. FedEx is the only company in its industry to receive the Committed to the Environment award.

Oct. 17, 2010 - PRLog -- FedEx Corp. (NYS: FDX) is recognized by The International Charter for clear commitment to understanding its environmental impact and reducing it. FedEx is the only company in its industry to receive the Committed to the Environment award.

“We were very impressed with the efforts FedEx is making, in particular with regard to reducing conventional energy consumption, as well as using cleaner vehicles in their distribution fleet,” said Steve Fortes, Director of International Charter. “FedEx is leading the way in understanding environmental impact and addressing it.”  

In particular, The International Charter recognized FedEx commitment to the environment as outstanding because
•   The company championed the development of hybrid technology compatible with its delivery trucks, and is believed to have the largest hybrid delivery fleet in the U.S.
•   The FedEx EarthSmart @ Work initiative represents a best in class program for spreading sustainable thinking through the different levels of the organization.
•   The company has increased FedEx Express vehicle efficiency by 14.1% since 2005, ahead of projections and on schedule for a 20% reduction by 2020.
•   The company is making good progress in the fields of renewable energy, and has doubled onsite solar generation to 3.92 MW.

Vice President of Environment and Sustainability. “Through major goals, established in 2008, like seeking to increase our vehicle efficiency and reduce our aircraft emissions intensity by 20 percent by 2020, a wide range of team members can contribute to reducing our environmental impact while assisting our customers.”

FedEx continues to push the envelope in the environmental arena, recently adding all-electric delivery vehicles in Los Angeles and Paris to compliment the all-electric vehicles in London, and working in Washington, DC, to help facilitate electrification of transportation.

Building on its alternative energy use, this October the FedExCologne hub will go on-line with a new solar energy system. Between Cologne, the largest US solar rooftop installation in Woodbridge, NJ, and a number of solar-powered facilities in California, by the end of the year FedEx will create and use approximately 5 megawatts of renewable energy, or the carbon equivalent of over 440,000 gallons of gasoline never burned.

EarthSmart is FedEx commitment to minimize our impact on the environment.  The EarthSmart family of programs includes EarthSmart Solutions, the company designation for certain innovative and sustainable assets; EarthSmart @ Work, its team member engagement program; and EarthSmart Outreach, its environmental philanthropic and volunteer program. It is designed to help ensure when investing in physical assets, beginning programs in the workplace, or forming collaborations with philanthropic organizations, these actions have clear, tangible benefits to the business, team members, customers, the environment and the communities in which FedEx operates. Earlier this month, FedEx environmental, social and economic performance again earned it a spot on theDow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) North America.
