New Market Research Report: Saudi Arabia Autos Report Q4 2010

Oct. 16, 2010 - PRLog -- Saudi Arabia's automotive market looks likely to post respectable growth in 2010, after sales rose slightly in 2009 despite the effects of the global economic crisis. Confidence in the sector is robust; dealers are optimistic, and a pilot project to produce Saudi's first car is a sign of interest in the manufacturing side. Economic, demographic and regulatory factors point to a good outlook, though downside risks should be acknowledged.

Industry insiders are generally upbeat about the outlook. Kamil al Jawhari, project manager of the Riyadh Motor Show, says the country has 'a highly attractive automotive market'. He adds the economic environment has helped 'consolidate' this reputation, given the continued growth in sales in 2009, and the pick-up in growth thus far in 2010. Al Jawhari added that demand for vehicle parts and maintenance services are on the rise with unit sales.

However, BMI notes that in a possible global double-dip recession, the damage to international demand and confidence would probably suppress oil prices somewhat, as well as demand for other Saudi exports and hunger for investment in the country. While the scenario is unlikely, a return to the poor growth of the late 1980s and early 1990s that restricted Saudi's development is not impossible.

Analysts and businessmen have told BMI that liquidity remained relatively tight in mid-2010, despite low base interest rates. This is unlikely to have a drastic effect on the Saudi auto market, as many units are purchased outright other than with credit, but it may have a drag effect on growth, particularly at the bottom of the market where credit purchases tend to be more prevalent. Inflation is another issue, as it erodes disposable income, and given the riyal's dollar peg and SAMA's limited armoury to tackle the issue, it may be a concern to the sector.

On the production side, the first domestically designed and produced car could be on sale in Saudi Arabia within three years if investors can be found, according to the King Saud University (KSU), it was reported in June. BMI believes establishing a production base in the region's largest car market could create the right environment for the segment to develop.

Risks aside, BMI believes Saudi Arabia is one of the more promising markets to choose for a production base in the Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC) region. As the biggest passenger car market in the region, it has the strong domestic demand that BMI rates in emerging markets, while the government is keen to diversify away from the oil sector.

The Saudi Clusters Programme (SCP), an official body, has identified automotive as one of five key industries it focuses on developing. While the Ghazal project is still in very early days, if successful, it could help stimulate the growth of the Saudi automotive sector by generating demand for components and support services. Experience shows that successful automotive industries must develop strong supply chains, with suppliers setting up or expanding near the new or growing vehicle plants.
