By: PRMG Ted Smirlis, Deer Park High School Sixteen participating high schools: Deer Park, Sachem, Island Trees, Smithtown, Bay Shore, Malverne, Patchogue-Medford, John Adams (Queens), Plainview-Old Bethpage, Hicksville, Hauppauge, Comsewogue, Miller Place, Brentwood*, Hampton Bays* and Half Hollow Hills*. * Denotes pre-rookie teams for 2011 season. They will borrow robots and participate in the Invitational. What: The Sixth Annual Deer Park Invitational is designed to showcase the benefits of robotics programs on students, schools and their communities. Students not only immerse themselves in the fields of physics and engineering, but also learn about problem solving, cooperation and teamwork. When: Saturday, October 16 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. Where: Deer Park High School, 1 Falcon Place, Deer Park, New York Directions: Take the LIE to Exit 51 South toward Babylon/Northport (Route 231). Take Deer Park Avenue/Route 231 South for approximately 2.5 miles. Turn right on Nicolls Road (CITGO gas station on corner). After 0.3 mile, turn left on N. 5th Street, then make another quick left on Falcon Place. School is on the right. Photo Ops: Students, team leaders and mentors competing and repairing robots. Winning teams receiving awards. # # # About School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. The Long Island FIRST Regional Competition is run by the School-Business Partnerships of Long Island (SBPLI). SBPLI was founded in 1984 by Fred Breithut with the goal of developing partnerships between local high schools and businesses that would provide students with practical experience and curriculum development, while helping the business community develop its future workforce. Over 100 partnerships have been formed. In 1999, Long Island FIRST was formed for the purpose of developing a Long Island Regional FIRST Competition. In 2000, 14 high school teams participated. The Long Island Regional has since grown with 48 teams participating in 2010. In January, registered teams were provided with supplies and the competition's game rules. The 2010 Competition was held at Hofstra University on March 25-27, 2010. End
