Under That Curving Roof of the Auditorio de Tenerife

It’s only been around for seven years but the Tenerife Auditorium has quickly become one of the Island’s most treasured buildings.

Oct. 15, 2010 - PRLog -- A futuristic anomaly amid the old world architecture, and unfortunately touristic resort buildings of the eighties, the auditorium stands out as a recently landed spaceship may. Yet far from being an eyesore, it is in fact a beacon in the Island’s capital city Santa Cruz. Now a national monument featured on one of six limited edition special stamps.

With a position sat just next to the ocean the building gazes over the sea, providing a rich addition to the shoreline view. The building began its construction in 1997 under the watchful eyes of architect Santiago Calatrava Valls, with very high expectations, esteemed with the expectation of a future national monument. Thankfully it hasn’t disappointed and seven years on from its completion it is hard to imagine a time without the building perching over the ocean, it has been embraced by the locals with open arms, and a building many visitors flock to.

When viewing Santa Cruz from the close by mountains, the auditorium really seems to stand out, its curved roof is a curious feature, and with that almost detached blade a unique architectural feature in the otherwise blocked architecture of the city. Indeed it is a relatively unique feature in the world at large.

By many this has been described as a masterpiece of modern architecture and Tenerife’s most impressive building.

It has not just been attracting the attention of architecture aficionados, tourists and locals; in fact it has had some very esteemed visitors.

On his visit in 2005 the former president of the united states of America Bill Clinton also popped by for a visit and a look at the building. Whilst visiting the island for a conference the former president made his way to the monument for a look. Clinton is the only former president to visit the island of Tenerife.

While the architect was originally criticised due to location changes, budget increases, and an alleged breach of safety conditions the building now acts as one of the islands most famous tourist attractions. Noted as the islands most famous building and also featured in much tourist literature. The building is also widely featured as a location in commercials and other television programmes.
Functioning as Tenerife’s premiere concert hall, the auditorium plays host to many prestigious and national concerts.

Presently it hosts the Tenerife national events Tenerife Danza, Jazz Atlantic, and other world music showcases. The hall also plays home to the Tenerife Symphonic orchestra as well as acting as the setting for the island’s national opera.

Near the auditorium is Tenerife’s largest buildings which tower over the city, yet cannot steal the attention away from this construction. Yet Santa Cruz is a rich diverse town with much to offer, a great host of activities and establishments for recreation. Certainly the city plays home to many nice museums and eateries as well as many beautiful apartments in Tenerife.
