New Transportation market report from Business Monitor International: "Turkey Autos Report Q4 2010"

Oct. 15, 2010 - PRLog -- Vehicle sales in Turkey have continued to grow in 2010 as the recovery from the global financial crisis continues. Turkey was notable for suffering few impacts from the crisis, but sales and production were affected. Sales in the first seven months of the year are up 16.1% year-on-year (y-o-y), with 363,000 units shifted, according to the latest figures from the Turkish Automotive Manufacturers' Association (OSD). Continuing economic worries combined with an increasingly unfavourable trade situation should encourage a degree of caution, but overall BMI expects Turkish auto sales and production to grow quickly and sustainably.

According to the latest figures, Turkish auto sales have stabilised in July, with sales growth at only .5% compared with June for a total of 63,719 units sold. The bulk of this improvement originated in the passenger car sector, with 1.6% growth over June - up 149% y-o-y. This stabilisation has awakened fears that global insecurity could be dampening down Turkish consumer demand. However, BMI expects that as long as the global economy does not experience a second crisis, Turkish auto sales will be resilient in the face of worries and will in fact continue to grow quickly and sustainably.

These global concerns have, however, impacted Turkish production. In July production stood at 83,795 units - down 19.6% from June and down 5% y-o-y. This was driven by shrinking passenger car production, which is down 13% y-o-y, to 47,516 units, while in the same period commercial vehicle production has grown 4%, to 33,013. This is driven largely by shrinking exports, which have decreased 5.4% y-o-y, as well as the greater market share within Turkey for imports, which have increased 151.7% y-o-y. These trends have driven down the overall capacity utilisation rate from 80% in June to 64% in July. However, production for 7M10 is still substantially higher than that of 7M09. Poor output growth of 32% y-o-y in the summer should be a concern, but BMI still expects production in 2010 to continue its general recovery. Overall, the Turkish auto industry will perform well this year and production will continue to be one of the major pillars of the thriving Turkish economy.

Turkey has become an attractive destination for many major carmakers as the market has registered continuous growth despite the global economic downturn in the last two years. PSA Peugeot Citroen has said Turkey is among its priority markets owing to its strong growth potential compared with the rest of Europe. Turkey's importance as a regional centre for auto production has grown in recent years, with foreign players taking advantage of the country's low-cost labour base and transport infrastructure improvements. It is also seen as a 'bridge' between Europe and Asia for gaining a foothold into the wider Middle East and Africa (MEA) region.
