WINGS, Women In Need Growing Stronger, will hold its seventh annual Sweet Home Chicago fundraiser at the Four Seasons Hotel, 120 E. Delaware Place in Chicago, on Sunday, December 12, 2010, from 10am to 1pm.
More than 400 children along with their parents and grandparents will decorate gingerbread houses, visit with Santa, take free family portraits, dance to the music of Ralph’s World and enjoy brunch. Student carolers from Robert Healy Chicago Public School will delight every family member with their singing.
Jim and Ellen O’Connor serve as honorary chairs and Ann Grissom and Sandy Wang McGowan as returning co-chairs. According to WINGS Board Chair Rita Canning, WINGS hopes to raise at least $400,000 to advance WINGS’ mission.
WINGS is a not-for-profit organization that owns and operates an emergency domestic violence Safe House in the northwest suburbs and numerous transitional homes and apartments to provide a safety net to families in need. In addition, WINGS programs and services help women and their children become emotionally and financially independent.
WINGS relies primarily on financial support from individuals, corporations and foundations and from its three resale shops in Palatine, Schaumburg and Niles. Less than 2 percent of WINGS operating budget is funded by the state of Illinois. WINGS’ need for additional support escalated on June 18, when its Palatine resale shop was demolished by a fire. WINGS resale shops represent $40,000 of income per store per month. A temporary resale shop is currently located at Park Place Plaza, 1315 Rand Road in Palatine.
