Oct. 14, 2010 - PRLog -- Brits are generally out at the very first glimmer of sunshine, basking in whatever rays summer is offering them.
Abroad they line the beaches in recline, working on that tan, before returning home to find the summer is already over. Though this quick consumption of the sun does not seem to be very healthy and it would seem that Britons have the highest sun burn figures out of all European nationalities.
While many are burnt in the British sun, some are burnt abroad, whether they are staying in apartments in Tenerife or are in Sardinia.
It was recently announced that nearly half of Britons had some form of sunburn, with figures reaching a concerning 46% over this past summer.
Of this 46% that got burnt, a third (36%) admitted that they did so in the process of trying to get a tan. And half of them said that they would risk getting burned again in favour of getting a tan
The research was commissioned by Cancer Research and Super drug who are trying to encourage people to enjoy the summer, whilst also be responsible with their exposure to the sun.
Far from being a cheap way of bronzing sunburn indicates that the skin has been seriously damaged by over exposure to the sun. This damage can eventually lead to skin cancer in later life.
The short term side effects are none too pleasant either, blistering, sore red skin. Yet it does not seem enough to put some people off, nearly half of those that got sun burn this year admitted to getting burnt every year and were likely to get burned next years as well.
The most common spot of burn is on the face, with the nose as the protruding, prominent centre piece taking the most damage, one of the perhaps more off putting dangers of sunburn is that it can cause premature ageing. Arms, shoulders and necks are the following most burnt other areas.
Martin Crisp, a spokesman for Superdrug spoke of his concern about the reckless tanning and sun burning, and had this to say regarding the survey’s findings "What's particularly concerning is that people are setting out with the specific aim of getting sunburn because they see it as part of getting a tan. What they aren't realising is that there is more going on in the skin than what you see on the surface and, while the sunburn and tan may fade, the damage does not. Put simply, the more time people spend in the sun, the more damage they are doing to their skin, and they should seriously ask themselves whether it's a risk they're prepared to take."
While Ed Young, head of information at Cancer Research also expressed his concern, “Sunburn is a clear sign that your skin has been damaged in ways that can lead to skin cancer, a disease that's affecting more and more people in the UK. While it's important to enjoy the sun safely to get enough vitamin D, there are risks involved in long exposures. And these results indicate that people aren't taking these risks seriously enough. Getting painful sunburn just once every two years can triple the risk of melanoma, the most serious type of skin cancer. Whether at home or abroad, use shade, clothing and plenty of sunscreen to protect yourself."
