Insurers Using S5Health Diabetes Toolset May Count Expenses Toward 80% and 85% Medical Loss Ratio

S5Health toolset improves the quality of health care and health outcomes for people living with diabetes. As of January 1, 2011, Insurers utilizing S5Health for diabetes management may count program expenses toward their Medical Loss Ratios.

Oct. 13, 2010 - PRLog -- S5Health toolset is developed to improve the quality of health care and health outcomes for millions of people living with diabetes. Beginning January 1, 2011, insurers are required to spend at least 80 cents of every premium dollar they take in for patient medical care. Insurers utilizing S5Health for chronic diabetes management can count program expenses toward the 80 percent and 85 percent Medical-Loss-Ratio (MLR). Mandates include 80% Medical-Loss Ratio for individual and small group products and an 85% ratio for large group policies. The proposal still must be approved by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Depending on how the rules are finally written will have a big impact on insurers, because the new health law requires them to refund any premiums that should have been spent on medical care.

S5Health Offers Face-to face, Telephonic or Web-Based Interactions
Insurers who want to proactively improve the health of their members living daily with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes can utilize S5Health diabetes toolset and communication platform to improve outcomes. S5Health offers patients a better quality of healthcare, improved access to care and increased efficiency of delivery. S5Health offers patients and providers the flexibility to choose how to accommodate individual circumstances and communication desires whether face-to-face, telephonic or web-based interactions that improve health and wellness.

S5Health Interactive Tools Encourage Better Health Outcomes
S5Health’s technology imports data from any brand diabetic pump or meter and creates simple to understand dashboards and reports to track patient’s blood sugar, insulin and carbohydrate levels. S5Health is designed to satisfy the unique needs of the diabetic patient by presenting personal biometric data in a consumer friendly dashboard that allows the patient to easily manipulate the information to realize trends and makes it easier for patients and care providers to actively manage health outcomes. The system offers interactive online tools to easily track trends and trouble areas, and connect with caregivers, payors, suppliers and other patients. S5Health empowers people living with diabetes to better manage their health with easy to understand, visual dashboards and actionable reports to make real behavioral changes.

Most healthcare thought leaders agree that diabetic consumers currently do not have access to the tools and support they need to better manage their chronic condition. S5Health was developed by an IT Executive who is also the father of a Type 1 diabetic. He was frustrated with the lack of tools and support available to help his daughter manage her condition. According to S5Health’s founder and CEO, Jim Jordan, “Diabetes is a daily management challenge for individuals, and their families living with the effects of the disease.”  Jim said, “Consumers utilizing the S5Health Diabetes toolkit reported they better understand their personal biometric data and can make actionable changes to improve the way they feel.” Statistics consistently show that increased adoption of disease management programs not only improve outcomes, but result in cost savings to insurers, employers and members through reduced health costs and reduced absenteeism.

Easier to Securely Communicate with Providers and Social Network
The S5Health toolkit includes a comprehensive and powerful online system that supports communication, customized branding, social network and easy integration with existing programs and consumer facing platforms. The S5Health system is configured so that each healthcare organization can easily and uniquely customize the portal to their specific consumer brand. In addition, the system can accommodate existing clinical health management, and reward programs used by insurers, employers or brokers. The ability to securely share health information with care providers makes it easier for physicians and nurses to recommend necessary modifications based on individual patient data.
