Oct. 13, 2010 - PRLog -- PULS’s innovative use of MOSFET technology means that for the first time only one redundancy module is needed to build a 40A redundant system.

In simple terms, a conventional redundancy system incorporates two power supplies connected in parallel, each being capable of handling the load should the other fail – this is known as 1+1 redundancy.  For higher output currents N+1 redundancy systems are employed, meaning that in the case of a 120A load, four 40A power supplies are used so that if one fails the remaining three units can safely supply the required power.  In both examples the power supplies are protected using diodes which use large amounts of energy especially in applications with higher loads. The power losses can be very high and also create heat problems requiring large heat sinks to control temperatures.

In the PULS YR80 diodes have been replaced by MOSFET for the first time delivering a number of significant benefits. For example, the low on-resistance of the MOSFET causes a considerably lower voltage drop than with diodes: at 40A output current a drop of only 50mV is present between the input and output terminals - with traditional diodes a drop of at least 500mV would occur. This not only saves energy but also reduces the heat generated making cooling much less of a problem. The YR80 produces losses of only 2.7W at 40A output current including losses at the terminals, the internal wiring and the supply circuit meaning that a heat sink is not required.

PULS’s Managing Director Harry Moore said, “Traditional diode-based redundancy modules waste enormous amounts of energy, produce excessive heat and require a lot of hardware to achieve the level of protection needed for vital equipment. The YR80’s use of MOSFET technology represents a step change in the design of these devices giving customers the opportunity to build leaner more efficient systems at significantly lower cost.”

The market for the YR80 and its soon to be launched 40A cousin, YR40, is expected to be considerable as equipment becomes ever more intelligent and sophisticated. Telecoms, production equipment, access control systems and signalling devices are some of the vital applications for the new redundancy module.
