Oct. 13, 2010 - PRLog -- Sales in Romania have been hit heavily by the global financial crisis, and this trend does not look like it will dramatically let up. A combination of tightening credit and increased taxes look set to stop any major growth of new car sales, BMI's projections have 2010 as the trough of the recovery though, with sales of only 113,375, down from 366,819 in the bumper year of 2007. We do not see this figure being reached by the end of the forecast period, with 2014s forecasted sales to be around 207,500.

However, the Automotive Manufacturers and Importers Association (APIA) in Romania has said that it does not expect new car sales to exceed 100,000 units over the course of 2010  which leads to the view that any change from our forecast will be downwards. It must be said that this downgrading of expectations is happening while the Government-funded cash for clunkers programme is going on. This is suggestive of other restrictions that are being placed on consumers, particularly the VAT increase from 19% to 24% in June, which changed from This resulted in a 40% year-on-year (y-o-y) fall in new passenger vehicles during July.

Other elements of the auto industry appear to be thriving, however. In terms of capacity, both Automobile Dacia and Ford Motor, the two largest auto majors in Romania, have been ramping up production.

The second-hand car market is also showing solid growth. Used car dealerships are reporting nearly 20% y-o-y sales increases in H110, which if sustained could take the country's total used car market to the 2008 level by the end of this year. This contrasts with the near 58% y-o-y decline in new car business in Romania during the same period and highlights BMI's concerns about the weak state of private consumption in the country.
