Oct. 12, 2010 - PRLog -- IOWA CITY, Iowa – October 11, 2010 – Certified Birth Doula Jun-Nicole Matsushita is gathering with families to celebrate the three years of service and the growing community of 50 Bamboo Birth families. As a doula, Matsushita’s mission to her clients is to help them experience birth as an empowering life event in the hospital setting. She works to educate women about their birth options and choices so that they are able to make informed choices during the pregnancy, birth, and as parents. Her mission to the community is to connect birth workers and to make the term “doula” a household term.

Amber Cummer recently gave birth to her son, Graham, 3 months. “We knew it was going to be great,” she reflects on her birth with Matsushita at her side, “but had no idea the impact having a doula would have.  When we enlisted her services, little did we know that we would be getting so much more than we bargained for!  I knew I wanted a doula from the start of my pregnancy.  I read all the books, did my research, had spoken to friends, and I was hoping a doula could help me give birth with no interventions.  Well, my expectations were far exceeded!  Matsushita helped shape the experience I was able to have during my pregnancy, labor, delivery and post-partum period.  Her knowledge, expertise and gentle guidance gave us the tools we needed to make the best decisions for our family and I thank her for that.  But the part I struggle even putting to words is what an impact her presence had during my labor and delivery.  She was there for me in a way that no one could be.  My labor and delivery was such an empowering experience and I know that her loving touch and calming presence is what got me through each contraction.  While in labor she saw to it that my wishes and needs were met and even anticipated the needs I didn’t even know I had.  Those peanut butter crackers post- delivery were the best snack I’d ever eaten!  Having a doula present is a tool I would wish for every woman for their labor and delivery.  However, Matsushita is more than just a doula, she is a gift.  Because this is truly HER gift and every family should be so lucky to have a doula present for such a beautiful moment in their lives.”

Are you a woman who is pregnant and wants to experience a positive, safe, natural birth in the hospital environment?  Matsushita supports women who are planning to give birth with little or no interventions in an Iowa City hospital, a woman who wants to learn labor coping skills such as guided imagery, hypnobirthing or active birthing, or a woman who is attempting a vaginal birth after a cesarean section (VBAC).  Many families wish to have somebody with them during the entire birth. A doula is able to support the birthing woman, her partner and family members. Many families wish to be prepared to avoid interventions at the hospital. A doula will help them make informed decisions and maintain a sense of control. Many families had previous traumatic or difficult births. Studies have shown that families supported by doulas have lower rates of cesarean or instrumental deliveries, epidural, analgesic and pitocin use, and experienced shorter labors. Women who have used a doula are reportedly more satisfied with their birth experience, feel more confident in their ability to mother, bond faster with their newborn, are less likely to have Postpartum Depression, and are more likely to breastfeed.

Matsushita is available for birth and postpartum support, and babywearing and birth plan writing consultations. Birth and postpartum services are for Iowa City families; birth plan consultations can be nationwide with communication performed via phone and e-mail.
