Oct. 12, 2010 - PRLog -- Production at a Peterborough-based factory was brought to a halt on Friday (October 8) when more than 100 factory workers set about raising funds for Wood Green Animal Shelters.

Staff at Mars Petcare in Shrewsbury Avenue, Peterborough, donned overalls and hard hats as they carried out a sponsored clean and tidy of their factory site to make it look its very best.

After spending more than eight hours gathering rubbish, re-arranging office space, cleaning site vehicles and sprucing up the factory gardens, the workers presented staff from Wood Green a cheque for £2,000.

The money raised will be used for the Charity’s Snip and Chip Campaign which offers free cat neutering and microchipping to people living in Peterborough.

For a limited time, Wood Green have teamed up with Cats Protection to give pet owners living in the PE1 to PE7 areas of the city the chance to have their cat neutered and microchipped free of charge.

To qualify, owners will need to be on a low income or state benefits, although individual cases that sit outside this criteria will be considered if there is a potential compromise to the cat's welfare. The offer of neutering is also available for long-term stray cats.

Head of Animal Welfare Shelley Wooding said: "We feel this scheme offers a fantastic opportunity to promote responsible pet ownership and support owners who are not in a financial position to otherwise get their cats neutered and microchipped or to afford the consequences of not doing this if things go wrong.
“The number of cats and kittens coming into shelters like Wood Green is increasing on a daily basis, many of them poorly and in need of treatment due to indiscriminate breeding and a lack of preventative treatment - Peterborough is a hotspot location for cats coming into the Shelters so it seems a sensible place to start in order to help as many cats as possible."

Plant Director Steve Hurst, who oragnised the factory clean-up, added: “Mars Petcare is proud to be part of the Peterborough community and as part of our commitment to the local area we want to ensure we are good neighbours keeping our site clean and tidy.
“We are also a business which is passionate about making a better world for pets.
“The activity for Wood Green is about making our factory a site our associates and neighbours are proud of, having fun and making a better world for cats."
