Oct. 12, 2010 - PRLog -- SAN JOSE, LOS ANGELES AND PLACENTIA, CALIFORNIA— The recent gas pipeline explosion in San Francisco prompted Nationwide Fire Protection Corp., a Placentia and San Jose fire protection company, to create a tip sheet on regular maintenance for restaurant fire safety equipment.

Costly damage may be avoided in a fire if the fire system is functioning, and maintenance and inspections play an important role in ensuring that, said Massoud Farazandeh, general manager of Nationwide Fire Protection Corp., a San Jose, CA fire suppression expert.

In the Sept. 9 explosion, a natural gas line explosion killed people and destroyed homes, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

“This explosion could have happened in a business or retail district,” Farazandeh said the owner of San Jose fire protection (http://www.nationwidefireprotection.com/) company. “These establishments must have functioning fire suppression systems unless they have been around for many years and aren’t required to get them because they have been grandfathered in.”

Most dining facilities have fire suppression systems, but some don’t keep them properly maintained. That means they might not work in the event of a disaster such as the gas pipeline explosion.

“In an unfortunate event like this recent catastrophe, you want to feel confident that your fire suppression system is in top-notch functioning order if there is any hope of protecting your business,” said the Placentia and San Jose fire sprinkler system (http://www.nationwidefireprotection.com/blog/index.php) Company.

Restaurant owners should hire a professional company to conduct inspections every six months. Those inspections should include the following tasks:
•   Test to ensure that the gas automatic shut-off valve works properly.
•   Trip the system from the pull station.
•   Trip the fire system from the terminal link.
•   Check to confirm the cable for the fusible links, brackets, CO2 cartridges, mechanical head and other parts of the fire system are in good condition.
•   Inspect ducts and plenum for grease buildup.
•   Ensure nozzles provide proper coverage over kitchen equipment.
•   Ensure nozzles are properly capped.
•   Ensure the pull pin and seal are replaced properly and system is tagged.
