Driving Conditions & How To Handle Them

Oct. 11, 2010 - PRLog -- When driving you have to be cautious of those around you and how your driving, but when your driving conditions are worsened what should you do? Well that’s what we are here for! We, here at Lawton Chrysler Jeep Dodge, have listed several different driving conditions and what you should do when put in that situation.

When hazardous driving conditions are encountered such as water, snow, ice, mud, sand or other hazards there are a few things you need to remember.  In any condition you should always remember to drive cautiously and allow extra distance for braking and avoid sudden braking or steering.

Driving at night:

It is no question that it is harder to drive at night than during the day because night presents more hazards so here are a few things to remember.

Slow down and keep more distance between you and other vehicles.
Adjust your mirrors to reduce the glare from other driver’s headlamps.
Avoid staring directly at the headlights of oncoming vehicles as you could become temporarily blinded.

Driving in the rain:

Rain and slick roads can make driving dangerous, so consider some of these tips to keep you and your loved ones safe.

During heavy rainfall increase the distance of your vehicle if needed to stop and slow down.
Keep your windshield wipers in good shape in case of a heavy rainfall.
If your tires are not in the best of condition, try to make slow stops. Quick stops can result in skidding and possibly lead to an accident.

Driving in flooded areas:

As many of us Oklahomans experienced during our flooding in the spring, we could use some more pointers on what to avoid so here ya go:

Avoid driving through flooded areas unless you are sure the water is no higher than the bottom of the wheel hub.
Drive through water slowly and allow increased stopping distance between you and other vehicles because braking performance may be affected.
After driving through the water, dry your vehicle’s brakes by braking several times with the vehicle is in motion.

Snowy or icy conditions:

Since we are in Oklahoma we do not have to deal with snow and ice but a few times a year, but this can cause some problems as many of us do not know what to do in this type of condition. Here are a few pointers to remember for the winter weather quickly approaching Oklahoma.

Speeding, rapid acceleration, sudden brake application, and sharp turns are all potentially hazardous in snowy and icy conditions so just remember to be SLOW. SLOW. SLOW. Slow down, take slow turns, brake slowly and don’t over accelerate your vehicle.
Keep a sufficient distance between the vehicle in front of you.

We want you to remember to stay safe on the roadways. If you have any questions, please contact Lawton Chrysler Jeep Dodge today.
