Savage Orthodontist Shares 3 Reasons for Early Evaluation in Children

Oct. 11, 2010 - PRLog -- SAVAGE, ST. PAUL AND MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA – The Savage, MN Orthodontists at Cosmopolitan Orthodontics have released a list of three reasons why children should have an orthodontic evaluation by their seventh birthday.

“The American Association of Orthodontics has recommended these early evaluations for years, and we are sharing some reasoning behind that,” said Savage Orthodontist Dr. Jennifer Eisenhuth, who owns Cosmopolitan Orthodontics, a Savage orthodontics practice.
2.   Early identification/treatment corrects some orthodontic problems.


Surgery and tooth extractions can be eliminted when certain orthodontic issues are discovered prior to the completion of jaw growth, said Dr. Trudy Bonvino, a Savage orthodontist (http://www.cosmoortho.com/) on Cosmopolitan Orthodontics.
2.   Harmful habits can be corrected.


Thumb-sucking, tongue-thrusting, habitual mouth breathing and pacifier use beyond age three can lead to orthodontic problems, said Bonvino, a Savage orthodontics expert (http://www.cosmoortho.com/blog/) .

Orthodontists use a variety of appliances to correct poor oral habits.
2.   Overjet can be corrected to protect against trauma.

A recent study found that 75 percent of children with overjet of 6 millimeters or more injure their front teeth by age 12 if the problem goes uncorrected, a Savage invisible braces (http://www.cosmoortho.com/types-of-braces.php) expert Dr. Bonvino said.

Overjet- also known as buck teeth- can be treated with an orthopedic appliance that encourages lower jaw growth.

Having an orthodontic screening by age 7 doesn’t mean treatment is needed, Bonvino said. Many patients are placed on an observation track until they are old enough for treatment.

“The key is finding out which track your child needs to be on,” she said. “If early intervention is necessary, parents need to know because there is a limited window in which it must be completed for optimum results.”
