New market study, "Indonesia Mining Report Q4 2010", has been published

New Materials research report from Business Monitor International is now available from Fast Market Research

Oct. 11, 2010 - PRLog -- The total value of Indonesia's mining sector in 2010 looks set to top US$71bn, helped by a global increase in commodity prices. BMI expects the industry as a whole to achieve the its first double digit growth rate for years achieving 10.6% in 2010 and sustaining or even surpassing this level year-on-year (y-o-y) up to 2014.

Over recent years, Indonesia has found it difficult to compete with other countries in attracting investment for the mining industry. Fears of resource nationalism unallayed by certain Indonesian politicians have contributed to this but an impression of over-legislation and regulatory uncertainty has dulled the enthusiasm of international investors. The Indonesian governments' recent legislation to simplify procedures was seen therefore as a step in the right direction and BMI is encouraged by reports that the government has been working individually with companies to clarify the regulations and ensure compliance in a spirit of co-operation.

However, the good work being achieved by the Energy and Mines Ministry is in danger of being negated by the imposition of new environmental regulations following a US$1bn carbon-swap aid deal with Norway that forbids new development on forest land. It is reported that the deal threatens delays or cancellations to up to US$14bn worth of mining projects including those affecting BHP Billiton, Newmont Mining and Freeport McMoRan Copper & Gold. It has been reported that the deal was signed by the Foreign Ministry without full consultation with other government departments, which is now subject to disagreements and differing interpretations within the corridors of power. This will not encourage international companies looking to invest in the rich opportunities which Indonesia offers mining companies.

Indonesia needs the investment to develop infrastructure in order that the mine companies can exploit resources which are often in remote and currently inaccessible areas. The government will have been cheered in recent months by the interest shown by some companies in developing the transport links and other essential foundations for development. Energy-hungry Indian companies in particular have shown interest in acquiring Indonesian coal assets with multibillion dollar investments from both Adani and RPower which include rail and port facilities standing out among others.

It is deals such as these which will not only develop the mining sector but contribute the developments of the country and a whole. Currently, the mining sector remains stable at 11.48% as a percentage of the Indonesian economy as a whole. However, given the richness of resources it has the potential to grow significantly and boost the economic development of the country as a whole. For that to happen, the government needs to provide clarity and transparency for investors to make sound business decisions.
