Nurture Mind, Body and Spirit to Fight Daily Stress

Fight premature aging with toned muscles, realistic goals and chasing your dream job

Oct. 9, 2010 - PRLog -- Research shows that the strongest correlation to disease and aging is low muscle mass or losing muscle mass, but the good news is that exercise is the best remedy, according to nutrition consultant Alix Landman.

Landman, speaking at a Body, Mind and Spirit workshop, said oxygen is the most critical element for human survival, and that exercise is the best way to boost oxygen intake. Landman, who is a Board Certified Diabetes Educator and holds a Masters in Public Health, emphasized that both women and men can prevent many of the risk factors for chronic, serious diseases by consistently eating healthy foods and exercising.

The Body, Mind and Spirit workshop was organized by ITWomen, a nonprofit, grassroots organization advancing women in IT, to provide members with the latest findings on stress and life planning.

Keep Your Mind Happy with "SMART" Goals
We are happiest and most motivated when we are striving for goals said Shari Roth, a leadership coach who specializes in helping people identify hidden barriers that sabotage their individual success. She recommends the “SMART” method for defining clear goals:  “SMART” stands for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistically High and Time bound. Roth, a consultant with Capital Idea, also urges people to identify the consequences of not achieving their goals to test their importance. Once a goal is well defined, it's easier to plan a clear course of action to achieve it. Action plans help us address obstacles so they don't become excuses to sabotage cherished goals, advised Roth.

Create the Life of Your Dreams
The Holy Grail of balance according to Lisa Plesky is finding a way to integrate your passions, spirit and dreams with your line of work.

Plesky, owner of Upside Thinking, switched from a career in federal law enforcement to motivational coaching and entrepreneur. Plesky challenged participants to ask themselves if their lives were shrinking or expanding. First identify what is non-negotiable in your life, she advised workshop attendees. Personal growth involves risk and can be uncomfortable, but without the discomfort, you run the risk of not achieving goals, she said. She also said that people should study how they use the 24 hours in their day, as it makes the difference of a lifetime.

The Body Mind and Spirit workshop is among several programs organized by ITWomen throughout the year to help members develop their full potential and advance their careers.
