Other areas covered by the Declaration include: the establishment of an 'integrated long-term infrastructure planning mechanism' for the mining sector; the promotion of research and development; Expectations are that the long-awaited Mining Charter may now finally be unveiled during August or September 2010, BMI will report on the implications of the new Charter when it is released to the public. Government Suspends New Prospecting Applications In August 2010 mineral resources minister Susan Shabangu announced that the government will suspend new applications for mineral prospecting rights, citing concerns that the current process has been undermined by corruption, it was reported by AP. The six-month ban comes into effect on September 1 2010. Country Overview Mining remains a vital industry for the country's economy. South Africa hosts the world's largest deposits of gold and about 80% of global platinum reserves. It is also a significant producer of diamonds. Industry Forecast South Africa has the largest mining endowment in Africa and the onus of spearheading the continent's mining activity falls on the South African industry, both in terms of economic growth, as well as setting standards for mining regulations. BMI has become more optimistic on the outlook for the South African mining sector over the past quarter, believing that it can now reach a total value of US$51.45bn by 2014. The dollar value of the mining sector has also been boosted by our more optimistic view on the outlook for the rand currency. For 2011, we are forecasting real growth of 4.13%, as the country benefits from the global economy returning to full strength. Mining should remain a key economic sector for South Africa, contributing some 8% to GDP. What the longer-term future holds for the South African mining industry depends a lot on the result of ongoing exploration activities and any future changes made to mining regulations by the government. In addition, instances of labour unrest and power shortages are two further obstacles for mining companies operating in South Africa to overcome.
