Oct. 8, 2010 - PRLog -- Lake Elsinore, CA, Wednesday, September 29th:  Elsinore First Assistance Center (EFAC) announced an open invitation to local community members to participate as volunteer reading tutors as it implements Elsinore READ (Reading Early, Achieving Dreams), a program funded through a Verizon Literacy Grant. Designed to support early reading and high student achievement, Elsinore READ prepares community volunteers as reading tutors, trains parents how to teach their children to read, and offers after-school reading classes directly to kindergartners.

Tutors may be high school students or adults who read English. No other previous training is required, as Elsinore READ staff will train all tutors in the use of the reading curriculum Ready, Set, Read. Upon completion of an initial training and a background check, tutors will work with individual or small groups of kindergarten students in reading classes under the supervision of Elsinore READ staff. Community service hours are available for all volunteers.

Using the Ready, Set, Read curriculum, formerly Vera Clark’s Teach Me To Read English in 100 Easy Lessons, Elsinore READ is presented in collaboration with local author and elementary teacher Vera Clark, M.A. Vera Clark is a teacher at Elsinore Elementary School and is volunteering her time to train and apprentice community volunteers and parents in the use of the program. The book, provided through Elsinore READ, includes everything needed to teach a child (or adult) to read, including flashcards and simple, step-by-step instructions. In just fifteen minutes a day, parents can use these simple two-page lessons to teach their child to read.

“Many students struggle in school, and early success in reading is clearly related to future academic success. Through Elsinore READ, we hope to support families and schools in bridging the reading gap that begins in kindergarten,” according to April Moore, chairperson of Elsinore First Assistance Center’s advisory board. “With the many resources and talented individuals in our community, including parents, students, retired individuals, and teachers, we wish to support local students in the critical area of reading. Elsinore First Assistance Center is passionate about meeting the needs of our community. We look forward to continuing our collaboration with local community members, schools, and libraries as we implement Elsinore READ through this Verizon Literacy Grant.”

The tutor training will take place on October 13, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Free training and curriculum will be provided to the first 20 tutors. Reading classes will take place Mondays and Thursdays from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. beginning October 25 and ending November 2 (no classes on 11/11 or 11/25). More information and event registration is available at www.elsinorefac.org or by e-mailing info@elsinorefac.org. Walk-in registrants are also welcome. Training seminars and reading classes will be held at Elsinore First Assembly of God at 19740 Grand Avenue, Lake Elsinore, CA 92530.
