Setting New Standards in Math Education - Spirit of Math Thornhill Celebrates Grand Opening Oct. 21

Oct. 8, 2010 - PRLog -- Thornhill, ON – In day school classes comprised of students with a wide range of skill levels and aptitudes, can you be sure your child is getting the education they deserve? Thornhill parents in search of more challenging education for their bright child have finally found what they’re looking for.

Spirit of Math Schools opened the doors to its new Thornhill campus this month and students are flocking. “It was as though parents were just waiting for the right program to challenge their high-achieving child to come along,” said Riyaz Datoo, owner of Spirit of Math Thornhill. “The parents have been so supportive. We had over 30 students registered before the school year even began.”

The Thornhill Campus will celebrate its Grand Opening on Thursday, October 21 from 5:00 to 6:30 at the Leo Baeck School North Campus, 36 Atkinson Avenue. The festivities include special guest speakers, a scavenger hunt, ribbon cutting ceremony and refreshments.

“Supplementary education is experiencing huge growth right now,” said CEO and Founder of Spirit of Math, Kim Langen, “Parents realize that their children are capable of so much more than what they are accomplishing in day school and are prepared to put in the time and effort it takes to help them realize their true potential.”

Datoo has been helping children reach their full potential for over 15 years as a volunteer math tutor. Only in his 30’s, he has a successful consulting business to his name and major Fortune 500 companies on his roster. Tutoring advanced math was his way of giving back to the community.

Over his years tutoring students aged eight and up, he frequently came across homework sheets that stood out from the rest. The problems were deep, they involved far more thought than simple procedural problems and they were all from the same school… Spirit of Math.

Datoo wanted to know more. He looked into Spirit of Math and discovered that not only do they offer an after-school program that caters especially to highly motivated students; they have 25-year history of producing national mathematics champions in competitions across the country, such as the Canadian National Math League, Mathematica and the Math Kangaroo.

He called the head office in North York to inquire about opportunities with Spirit of Math and made arrangements to visit a class. “It was remarkable to see how engaged the students were,” said Datoo. “This is the kind of education the school system needs.” Following his passion for math and desire to help children succeed, Datoo pursued the opportunity to become a Spirit of Math campus owner.

The Thornhill campus is open to students from grades 1 to 6 with a B+ or higher average. Classes are held Thursday evenings from September to June at Leo Baeck Day School - North Campus, 36 Atkinson Avenue.

About the Campus owner
Riyaz Datoo was born in Zaire and moved to Canada at the age of five. As a child he was always focused on sports, but by grade 10 he discovered that he had an aptitude for mathematics and began to pursue it avidly. He graduated in 1994 with a B.A. Honours in Actuarial Science and established his own consulting business in 1996, which is still in operation today. His passion for math led him to volunteer as a math tutor for advanced math students with a specific focus on integrating young new immigrants into the Canadian school system. Datoo is the proud father of a beautiful 5-year-old daughter… and future Spirit of Math student.
