Coins begin to fall on him as he reminisces about his childhood trips to the U.S. Mint. He goes on to compare himself with the coin in the United States armed forces and argues that the last thing he thinks about before he blacked out, was "you". In 2001, John is on vacation, when he meets Savannah Lynn Curtis (Amanda Seyfried), a college student on spring break. For several days, Savannah and John fall in love. John meets Savannah family, and his neighbor, Tim Wheddon (Henry Thomas) and autistic son, Tim, Alan (Braeden Reid), who looks at Savannah. Savannah meets and befriends the father of John (Richard Jenkins), the reclusive man who is only interested in his collection of coins. John says Savannah, that his father was always obsessed with coins and did not have a lot of father John, whose mother is not in the picture. Savannah refers to John that his father, Alan, possibly autism. This violates John, who believes his father is calling Savannah backward. He was so caught up in anger that he gets to fight a rich neighbor, Savannah, Randy (Scott Porter), randomly punching Tim in the process. John apologizes to Tim next day and leaves Savannah note looking for her forgiveness before you leave it to an end. Savannah gets a note, and they spend the last day together. John returned to the army, and he and Savannah to start long-distance relationship through handwritten letters. John believes that this year will be the final year of his military service, but after the Sept. 11 attacks, is torn between returning home and his sense of duty. It is given by the weekend OFF, which he spends with Savannah and her family, as well as with his father. He asked the Savannah its view that whether or not he should re-enlist, and she tells him to do what he feels is correct. Like the rest of the soldiers of his unit, John wants to re-enlist. Over the next two years, John face dangerous missions and begins to live almost exclusively for letters of Savannah. John and Savannah to find themselves drifting apart. Finally, Savannah, sad but resigned, reports John Dear John letter, informing him that she had become engaged to someone else. John, depressed and disappointed by the news, believes that she is engaged to Randy. On his mission, he enters a danger zone and fired several times at the enemy, which bridges back to the first scene of the movie. After recovering from his wounds Captain John shows that he go home and spend time with his father, but still upset Savannah, John wants to re-enlist again. He decides that he will make a career out of the army and stay involved for as long as possible ...
