The evening began with Alissa Torres, author of American Widow, addressing the crowd of 60, sharing with them how she drew upon her leadership skills to survive personal crisis and the lessons she learned thru the adversity. She was seven months pregnant when her husband, Eddie, started his dream job at Cantor Fitzgerald; his 2nd day on the job was September 11th, 2001. While Alissa was certainly not the only loved one to experience the nightmare of the attacks; she has been an inspiration to many and her book is currently being used in university classrooms not only for its content, but also its writing style.
Sam Simon, Senior Fellow at Intersections International, presented Alissa Torres a special award for her courage and leadership in the community, "Alissa represents the power of human beings, particularly Americans, to heal. She set an example of how one can deal with adversity and moves on to build a better future."
Also honored at the event was Alfa Demmellash, CEO and co-founder of Rising Tide Capital. Ms. Demmellash was recognized as one of three recipients of the 2010 Future Global Leaders award.
