Lansing, Michigan Doctor's Approach U.S. Physicians Trying To Get Creative On Insurance

For Dr. Marcy Street, board certified dermatologist and the country’s first African American female MOHS surgeon in the country, the plight of the nation’s uninsured is something she comes face to face with every day. ‘It is truly difficult that there are so many people in the country who either do not have adequate health coverage or are completely without any. I deal with the life threatening issue of skin cancer as a MOHS surgeon on a daily basis, and the thought of having to turn away someone in dire need should never enter into the equation of whether or not they should or can be treated. We do our absolute utmost to give discounts whenever we are able to, and we also offer samples of certain medicines whenever we can.’

While the debate about healthcare insurance rages, the good news is that there are still some physicians in the United States that are doing what they can to ensure their patients get the treatment they need, when they need it.

‘It’s a very slippery slope,’ explains Dr. Street. ‘On the one hand, much of what we try to do in our practice is to get the word out as often as possible regarding education about issues related to skin cancer in an effort to help cut down the numbers of those in the nation who might, without the proper information, be diagnosed. On the other hand, we’re not seeing the numbers of cases going down relative to the number of uninsured who are knocking on our door.’
