The symbol of Sardinia

-----------A look at Nuraghe-------------

Oct. 7, 2010 - PRLog -- A nurague is considered a symbol of Sardinia as they can only be found in the Italian region.  It is said that there are roughly over 8,000 nuraghes that still exist in Sardinia, but it is estimated that at one time there was more than 30,000.  If you had to describe you'd most probably say that it's a piles of stones put together to resemble a structure of some style, but they are more than just a pile of rocks, they are towers that have stood the test of time (to an extent).  Usually you would see one or many joined together forming a complex of numerous towers that had connecting structures and walls.  These would be remnants of a village that was home to some from the Nuragic civilization

The word Nuraghe comes from the word “nur” which means hollow heap, although it is disputed that the word is related to the places Nurra, Nurri, Nurru and possible the nurra stones.  The shape of a Nuraghe is similar to that of a bee hive but the structure doesn't have any foundations, so it stands together via their stones which they structure is held together by the very stone.  So the very stones you see on the outside are the ones you will see and supports the structure.

These were built between the 18th-15th centuries BC at a time many would call the Bronze Age and the late Bronze Age.  These were used constantly after they were first raised that is until Rome entered Sardinia.  The earliest form of nuraghi were the corridor nuraghi where the outside of it looks just like a pile of rocks whilst the insides are bare and empty this was so that they can make it an habitation area.

There is the tower nuraghi which seemed to have many floors, there would be a stair case that would run around the interior of the nuraghi which is why each of them are topped off with a dome as it was accommodate the circular staircases, with the circular courses becoming smaller as it came to the top.  Researcher don't know what then use of the Naraghes were for there are some that believe they were used  for religious purposes , whilst others believed they were used for military purposes as some them are located on hills

Nuraghes are found all over Sardinia mainly in the North-West and south central parts of the island.  It is recommended that you visit one that has been excavated as ones that haven't could be buried very deep and who knows what might happen if you go in one.

The village called Arzachena would be an ideal place that is near by the Albucciu nuraghe.  Staying at this village may not be a bad idea as it is near the famous Costa Smeralda and also the island of La Maddalena.  Which makes it one the well known towns in the Sardinia.  So it is an ideal location think about if you are going to any Sardinia villas.
