Music certainly surrounds us, and there is some sense of dimensionality in music, but music generally proceeds from some specific point in space and emanates from there to surround us. Thus, sculpture, imparts a livingness that most other arts do not.
   
We think of most sculpture as being chiseled stone or fashioned bronze, or some material that will withstand the onslaught of ages, that stands up against sand and wind, that will be there a thousand years later, the figure it represents somehow maintaining its presence even beyond death. If we should desire that kind of longevity, then by all means, sculptures in marble and bronze are what we want. And yet, the very material robs the sculptures of that delicacy and tenderness that some sculptures should possess. If we are willing to give up that cold but lasting stone, with glass sculptures it is possible to obtain that delicacy, fragility, even intricacy that goes with our subjects but that other materials diminish.
